How to make your home feel bigger
A common reason given for moving house is that there wasn’t enough space at the old one. While this may sometimes be true, it is often the case that there was in fact plenty of space, it just wasn’t used as effectively as it could have been. De-cluttering your spaces and changing a couple of basic things in your home decor can really rejuvenate your home and make it feel a lot bigger.
The first step is to de-clutter. Look through your possessions and furnishings and ask yourself, “do I need all of this?”. A lot of the time you’ll find the answer is no; it’s habitual to let things accumulate over the years, and while some objects will inevitably have strong sentimental feelings, a lot of others you’ll realise you don’t need any more. Items and furnishings you decide you no longer need can be taken to the dump or, perhaps more ideally, donated to charity.
The next step is to replace any bulky furnishings with smaller versions. These days you can get lightweight flat pack alternatives to furnishings which were previously quite large. While you’re shopping for flat pack furnishings, buy some shelving and/or storage cabinets too. These can be used to store any objects you feel you have to keep but that you don’t want cluttering up your house. Smart storage solutions exist nowadays including drawers built into your staircase, under-bed storage, and much more.
In terms of redecorating, light colours on the walls and well lit rooms can really make a room feel bigger. Consider replacing your curtains with shutters to let more light into the room and add a more modern feel to your window accessories. Hopefully these simple steps will make your rooms feel bigger and airier.
